World Vision donates K83mitems to school for the deaf

World Vision Malawi has donated assorted items worth K83.5 million to Maryview School for the Blind in Chiradzulu District.

The school, constructed by the Roman Catholic Church, opened its doors in 1968 and is home to 156 learners with hearing disabilities, who mostly struggle to pay a contribution of K45 000 every term.

Speaking on Friday during the handover of the items at the school in Chiradzulu, World Vision food  assistance officer Andrew Chimera said they donated the items to help the learners overcome some of the challenges they face in the course of their studies.

He said: “World Vision believes in making sure that children live life to the fullest. As a Christian organisation, we believe that we have a duty to reach out to vulnerable communities.

“That is why we have donated the items to the learners because we know they struggle to access such necessities.”

The school’s head teacher Enock Karosi said although government supports the institution, there is need for other well-wishers to help it as most learners fail to pay the K45 000 contribution.

“Most learners come from poor backgrounds, as such, they do not afford to pay the contribution fee. Yet, this is a boarding facility where learners are expected to eat and get other supporting resources,” he said.

Karosi said the donation, which included books and sanitary kits will motivate the learners to work hard in class.

“It is depressing for children to learn without adequate resources. In the past, the founders offered support but they stopped in 2010. We, therefore, thank World Vision for the support,” he said.

During the event, learners performed activities such as drama, traditional dances and music.
